Funny the kinds of peeps who frequent here
Any one know http://diary.tedfox.com/? Ever since I put up the eXTReMe Tracking thing I've been quite intrigued as to the kinds of visitors to brokenVase and they systems they use and all these info.
Our latest is this tedfox site... it's password protected and I have no idea who he/she is and seems that for the past 2 days there where links from this site to ours. If you own this tedfox site, we would like to know you...
Is it illegal to refer someone else's site without permission? (just joking) but at least ask politely lah...
Still, did you know that if you search us on the net with anything relatively unique strings of text, say for example 'fitness First' (our gym) you will find us in the top 20 results? cool huh? We've been around long enough to gain 'some recognition' hahah...

Life is slowing down
Suddenly we realised that its just the 2 of us here in Brissy OZ... We cook, we clean, we work, we watch DVD... It's christmas eve and we are home thinking of not cooking dinner and watching some movies we have rented on DVD... Hmm...
Anyway, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity, seeing that I get an average of 20+ hits a day, to do a survey on what you 'brokenVaseans' do on christmas? Leave a comment and tell my what are you events for this festive season. Just for kicks...

View from the top
Did you know that when you are coming in to the airport at night, the view of the ground looks like a computer circuit board with fancy 'ah beng' lights?
Roads are like the bus wiring and buildings with street lights look like chips on the board. Stadiums and tennis courts look like cpu sockets. The view was quite magnificent... too bad I couldn't take the picture.
Maybe next time I will ask for window seat more often... I used to believe in aisle seats 'cos can go toilet easier tsk... tsk... Also funny 'cos I was like so amazed by the sight but must keep cool and look 'professional', 'cos there was another guy beside me also in a suite reading his business newspaper and here I am with my jaw open at the view and mechwarrior book in my hand ALSO in a suite... quite hilarious... :S

I feel like rushing assignment liddat!
Yup! for the first time, it felt like I was doing a school assignment with my own WIFE! She was helping me do data entry of my work into the database for my prototype. And boy it was tediuous!
Thank you dear! muaks!
Since it was raw database pumping, there was no 'user-friendly' interface and all table relationship had to be entered manually... enter primary key... enter foreign key there... (tech talk!) and she did it! Maybe I can teach her to program.. hmmm

Looking at the past year
as the year comes to an end, i can't help but look at the past year and reflect on what have been going on, my achievements, my downfalls, my joys, my regrets....
this year has been a year of major changes in my life. i left the corporate rat race and once again, immersed myself into the academic world. my results aren't the best that i can achieve but they ain't too bad either. but the glory is not mine. it belongs to Him.
i got married to a wonderful man, learn to be his wife, learn to be an encourager and a good partner to him. and still am learning..
i left what i have been used to and knew all my life, the little bubble that i grew up in. stepped into an alien land - exciting yet relaxing, daunting yet comforting. i left my beloved family and friends behind, in search for a better quality of life, but missing them at each step of the way. new friends are made but old friends are still missed dearly.
this year went too fast. without realising it, i have been in brisbane for 10 months. and married for 10 months. and back to being a student for 10 months.
with the memorable experiences that i had over this year, they encouraged me to look ahead and move forward into another year of change, hope, sorrow, joys, precious lessons and even more trials.

all i want for christmas.....
i had two wonderful nights just before christmas. and that is more than all i want for christmas.
i went to watch Mama Mia last night. OMG it was awesome, beautiful, exciting, wonderful, etc etc. the musical production has a little edge over the others as the songs are all from ABBA and that definitely can't go wrong. the storyline was simple and sweet, nothing fanciful. and the dancing was awesome, with those retro seventies, eighties kind of dance steps and colourful, loud costumes. they had only a cast of 19 people and that was enough. i had three hours of total bliss and ultimate food for my musical soul.
and of course, it reminded me so much about music ministry. the people, the fun, the tears, the hard work, the love for music and theatre production and the desire for reaching out to those who have yet found God. i missed those days very very much.
three wonderful years i had with music ministry. three wonderful musicals i was involved in, The Anchor Holds, The Inheritance and The Irony.
one thing i have to add, the audience was awesome. for the last few songs, the young and the old, the grandchildren and the white-haired old grandpas and grannies stood up to dance. it was very heartwarming.
the night before, i went to south bank to watch fireworks and this christmas concert called, The Singing Christmas Tree. i have been bugging merv to go with me to watch some carolling performances since i missed those in singapore and those the music ministry used to do. the fireworks was alright. not as good as the riverfest fireworks but it was enough to heighten everyone's christmas spirit.
the concert was wonderful. there were a lot of people waiting to watch it and we had to queue pretty long for it to get in. but they have three shows in one night so it wasn't that bad. they had the usual christmas carols BUT there is a twist to it. they had drums and saxophone, guitars and keyboards. the carols though some are hymns are rearranged to be very upbeat. there was funky dance moves and even tap dancing. there was a tall christmas tree about 4 storeys high with the choir strength of about 40 - 50 people standing in it and grooving to the music. it was co-presented by 2 christian churches and some other organizations. there was the navitity scene with real live sheep, mary and joseph came in with a real donkey and three wise men came into the open air stadium in live camels. to a certain extent they were preaching about the true meaning of christmas but the interesting and funny thing was there was santa, rudolph the reindeer, frosty the snowman and jingle and bells appearing in one of the songs. the children in the audience were so excited to see these characters and i have a feeling that they will grow up thinking THOSE are the real characters of christmas.

underneath my christmas tree
i've got a tiny present underneath my christmas tree. it ain't big or bright or shiny as the christmas lights. it is a present from merv. nicely wrapped up in matte silver paper with a silver bow in the front. it is a gift voucher to this expensive apparel shop, witchery, in aussieland. thank you so much sweetie.

3 Days to Go... 3 days to go and it will be Christmas. my first christmas in aussieland. we have a small christmas tree (about 30 cm) with some little decorations. other than that, nothing in the house looks christmas-y.
we will be having a christmas party with whoever that is still here. (which is not much people left coz almost everyone went back to singapore for christmas) merv has not really thought about the christmas menu as well but it would most probably be asian cuisine. anyone has any suggestion what to cook?
i have been bumming around. my day pretty much goes like this: wake up in the morning, make breakfast for merv and me, sit in front of the computer, surf, watch TV, peel oranges ( i have a thing for peeling oranges - i find it therapuetic), make lunch for myself, read, go to the gym (i went for the first time in 3 months yesterday!!), watch some more tv, surf, help merv make dinner, watch DVD, sleep....how's that for a life?
oh well, i pick up some cooking though. i made beef pho (vietnamese beef noodles). it tasted alright but just that oomph missing. and merv and i both agree that it must be the MSG that restaurants put inside the soup that makes it so tasty. and also i made chwee kuey. it was pretty nice.
so i guess all is not lost with me staying at home and bumming around. at least i learn to cook a little...

Bored
there is pretty much nothing to do here in brissy when you really got a lot of time on hand and can't drive.
but there are many things which i need to do but am just procrastinating them. like, typing out my resume, get myself enrol for the next module of CPA Program, looking out for a job. oh ya, and going to the gym.
well, at least, i am doing one thing. learning to drive.

Scorching Christmas
it is already the month of December. it is feeling kinda weird when you have really hot Christmas season when people are talking and singing about white christmas.
this is my first summer in brissie. can't say that i truly look forward to it. sdyney hit a high of 42 degrees just yesterday. over here, it is still alright at 31 degrees. but the fact that in queensland you have a higher chance of getting skin cancer than in any other part of australia is a major deterrent from the ever so tempting pool that we have in just a couple of steps away.
