Cindy - an old foxy lady
what have we gotten ourselves into? the first question that we asked when we saw her on saturday afternoon. she was filthy and skinny. she looks scared and has bad breath. one of her toenails looked deformed. her ears were black from all the gunk.
i thought to myself, "this time i have carried the "love for dogs" a little too far.."
she is one of four pet greyhounds of a lady who is a victim of domestic violence and GAP Queensland (Greyhound Adoption Program of Queensland) needed someone to hold them while they "queued" to go on the waiting list to go into the program. if not, they will have to be put in the pound and later be put down if nobody wants them.
i offered to help to hold one. i thought it was a good idea. those poor girls need a home to stay, a companion for katie, a trial for us to see if we can manage more than one greyhound, in case that in the future, we want to get another one.
she has never been in a house before and she has been in kennels for nine years of her life. (in human years, she is 70+ years old!!) she has some trouble with the stairs. she bumped her head a few times on the glass sliding doors. she was a little scared of us as well. and she peed on the balcony because her routine toilet breaks were all thrown out of whack and also she didn't know that a balcony is considered part of a house.
the first day/night, all she does was to walk around the house. in and out of rooms, toilets, sniffing at stuff everywhere. you can tell she was scared. straight out of the kennels into the pound where the conditions are bad and then straight into a foreign place with strangers. i would be scared shitless if i were her. she scurries away everytime she hears a strange noise. the whole night she was just walking around in our room.
two nights and two days with us now..
1. she knows that she has to do her toilet stuff in the yard and she is starting to let us know that she needs to go to the toilet.
2. she slept very well last night in our wardrobe (she likes our wardrobe).
3. we gave her a bath as soon as she came to us and she is smelling much better now.
4. she is less afraid of us and now wags her tail and do a crazy dance when she is happy to see us.
katie has been wonderful with the new girl on the block. she has been showing her how to do toilet stuff in the yard, how to go up and down the stairs. proud katie has been showing her around the neighbourhood as well.
we think she is generally a very pleasant dog to have. she has a good temperament and she is very responsive. she will make a wonderful pet to a good home.
i totally agree with mervin. we have been too pampered in terms of katie. she was a beautiful, well groomed, well taken care of before she came to us. she is well trained and so easy to handle. and i thought the situation would not defer as much when it comes to this "new one".
i think we will both be very sad to see her go when she goes on the GAP list but we will be happy for her when she finds a good home to live out the rest of her life as a pampered pet.
